Adipurush: Ban On Prabhas-Kriti’s Film Lifted By Nepal Court, Kathmandu Mayor Vows To Not Let It Release

Adipurush Nepal Ban: Ever since its release, Om Raut's directorial venture Adipurush has been embroiled in numerous controversies. Despite generating significant pre-release hype, the film featuring Kriti Sanon, Prabhas, and Saif Ali Khan has been met with predominantly negative feedback.
Audiences and notable figures have been pointing out significant flaws in the film's dialogues, costumes, and characterizations. Amidst these controversies, the ban on Adipurush has been lifted by the Nepal court. However, the Mayor of Kathmandu has vowed to defy the court's order due to his opposition to the film's screening.
NEPAL COURT LIFTS BAN ON PRABHAS' ADIPURUSH
In a recent development, the Nepal court lifted the ban on all Hindi films, including the contentious Adipurush. The court has instructed authorities not to impede the screening of movies approved by the country's censor board. However, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah opposes the film's screening due to a dialogue that refers to Sita as 'India's daughter.'
Expressing his disagreement, Mayor Shah declared his willingness to face any punishment but affirmed his determination to prevent the screening of Adipurush in theaters across Nepal. He emphasized that the matter concerns Nepal's sovereignty and independence, which he cannot compromise.
Mayor Shah shared a Facebook post stating, "The film's writer said that Nepal was under India, this clearly shows India's ill intention. To consider this as a gimmick by the Nepalese government and for the court to issue an order favoring the film's screening means accepting that Nepal was once under India's rule, rendering both the court and the government subservient to India."
On the other hand, Judge Dhir Bahadur Chand of the Patan High Court expressed the view that films approved by the censor board should not face screening bans as it is ethically unsound. In a statement to the media, Bhaskar Dhungana, the President of the Nepal Motion Picture Association, declared that they would ensure the screening of all movies that have obtained permission from the censor board. He added, "Now we will screen all movies passed by the censor board."
HERE'S WHY PRABHAS' ADIPURUSH GOT BANNED IN NEPAL
Earlier, on Monday, the Nepal court banned Adipurush along with other Hindi films, citing a controversial dialogue. The film depicted Sita as the daughter of India, while many believe that Sita was born in Janakpur, located in Southern Nepal, and is therefore known as Janaki. This discrepancy led to the court's decision to ban the film. However, the ban was lifted on Thursday following permission from the censor board.
Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the decision of the Kathmandu Mayor to ban Adipurush in Kathmandu has been followed by the Mayors of Dharan and Pokhara, resulting in a complete halt to the film's screening across Nepal.
