Cannes Film Festival 2023: Did You Know This Is The Only Indian Film To Win Top Honour 76 Years Ago

First Indian Film At Cannes: The prestigious 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will begin on May 16, and everybody is eagerly waiting to see what unfolds during this year's festival.
The Festival de Cannes takes place annually in May and brings together film professionals from all around the world, including artists, directors, and actors. The event is held on the French Riviera to honour cinema.
Ahead of the celebrations, it's a moment for Indians to take pride as Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma is set to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi actress happens to be the brand ambassador of L'Oreal and will probably be representing the brand at the film festival.
Over the years, there have been several Indian films, and notable celebrities have represented the country at the film festival. But did you know that it was 76 years ago when the first Indian film took over the global stage and also won the grand prize?
CHETAN ANAND'S NEECHA NAGAR FIRST INDIAN FILM TO PREMIERE AND WIN AT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
It is always Satyajit Ray's 1955 film Pather Panchali that is regarded as the movie that took Indian cinema global. But way before Ray's classic, it was producer and actor-director Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar that first represented India on a global platform at its 2nd edition. And sadly, it was the last Indian movie to win an honour on the French Riviera.
The movie captures the essence and harsh times during the Indian-Pakistan partitions and the cruelty of the landlords prevalent during those times. And Neecha Nagar is the only Indian film to receive the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Neecha Nagar is regarded as one of the most underrated films of its time, and unfortunately, it was never released in the country but won top honours at Cannes.
It was not an easy win for Neecha Nagar, as it had tough competition with films such as Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City (Italy), David Lean's Brief Encounter (UK), and Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend (USA).
Neecha Nagar starred Uma Anand, Rafiq Ahmed, Rafi Peer, and Zohra Sehgal.
