Throwback Tuesday: When Kartik Aaryan Dropped From 90Kg To 72Kg For THIS Film. Revisiting His Transformation
Kartik Aaryan's transformation for Kabir Khan's Chandu Champion remains one of the most remarkable physical journeys of his career, reflecting the actor's unwavering commitment to portraying India's first Paralympic gold medallist, Padmashree Murlikant Petkar, with utmost authenticity. The role not only marked a major milestone in his acting career but also earned Kartik his first-ever Filmfare Best Actor Award, making Chandu Champion a defining chapter in his cinematic journey.

Over nearly 14 months, Kartik underwent a dramatic transformation, losing around 18 kilos-dropping from nearly 90 kg to 72 kg while reducing his body fat percentage from 39% to an astonishing 7%, all achieved naturally without shortcuts. His goal was not just to look athletic on screen, but to truly embody the strength, endurance, and discipline of a champion sportsman.
In one of his earlier interviews, Kartik's trainer Tridev Pandey had spoken about the actor's relentless dedication, saying, "Kartik put in immense effort, balancing shooting and workouts simultaneously. We would wake up early, no matter where we were Panchgani, Kashmir, Mahabaleshwar and start the day with running and boxing drills. In the evening, regardless of how late it was 6, 7, or even 9 pm, we made sure to complete at least 45 minutes of strength training. As Kartik was not only training but also shooting, his rest was limited, so it was important to prevent burnout."
A major part of this transformation came through an intensely disciplined diet and lifestyle overhaul. Kartik completely gave up sugar for nearly 1.5 to 2 years during the preparation and filming process, despite being known for his love of sweets-calling it one of the toughest sacrifices he made for the role. He followed a strict calorie-deficit, high-protein meal plan, replaced regular rice with cauliflower rice, cut out processed foods entirely, and stuck to measured portion-controlled meals. Combined with a fixed sleep schedule and strict recovery regimen, his diet became the foundation of his physical reinvention.
His fitness routine was equally rigorous, designed like that of a professional athlete rather than a film star. Since Chandu Champion required him to portray a boxer, swimmer, Army officer, and elite sportsman, Kartik trained for hours every day in boxing drills, swimming sessions, strength training, endurance conditioning, and functional athletic workouts. He mastered multiple skipping techniques, pushed his body through intense weighted exercises, and built sport-specific stamina under expert supervision, ensuring his transformation reflected performance as much as appearance.
When Chandu Champion released, Kartik's dedication earned widespread praise from both critics and audiences, with many calling it one of the finest performances of his career. Directed by Kabir Khan, the film was appreciated for its emotional storytelling and inspiring narrative, while Kartik's sincerity and physical commitment stood out as a defining highlight-proving that his transformation was not just a fitness achievement, but a milestone in his evolution as an actor.
