Jigra Review: When An Actress Like Alia Bhatt's Performance Looks Mediocre You Know The Film Has Gone Wrong

Jigra Review: Vasan Bala is known for his movies like Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota and Monica, O My Darling. While the former was a theatrical release, the latter got an OTT release. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota received positive reviews, but was a disaster at the box office, but Monica, O My Darling got a fantastic response when it premiered on Netflix. So, when it was announced that Alia Bhatt is teaming up with Vasan Bala, we were quite excited about this collaboration as one is an indie filmmaker and another is a commercial big screen actress. Today, finally, Jigra has hit the big screens, so is it worth your time and money? Find out in our review below...
The movie revolves around siblings Satya (Alia Bhatt) and Ankur (Vedang Raina). Since childhood, Satya has been very protective about her brother. After their father dies by suicide, they start living with a relative. Ankur, who is innocent, goes for a business trip along with his cousin Kabir to a country called Hanchi Dav, but gets involved in a drug case and is given death penalty. Satya travels to Hanchi Dav to save her brother. How she does that forms the story...
On paper, the story of Jigra would be mind-blowing, but the execution is very weak. In fact, we an call this Vasan Bala's weakest film till date. The first half of the movie is very slow, and though the things become better in the second half, the messy climax spoils everything.
The film's plus point is the emotional quotient. There are some heartwarming scenes between Satya and Ankur that touch the right chords of our hearts, and in the climax there are a couple scenes that have been captured wonderfully. But, apart from these few things, there are not many things in the movie that would impress.
Jigra is a prison break film, and we saw a same genre film titled Savi a few months ago. The Divya Khossla starrer was a much better film than this. The planning and plotting that Savi did in the movie kept us hooked. But, in Jigra, the screenplay and narration fail to keep us engaged throughout.
Jigra Actors' Performances
Alia Bhatt is undoubtedly one of the best actress we have in the industry. But, here her performance looks mediocre. She is amazing in the emotional scenes, but overal the spark is missing. Vedang Raina grabs our attention the most in the movie with his fantastic performance. Jigra gives him a very good scope to perform and he shines. The chemistry between Alia and Vedang as siblings is impressive.
In the supporting actors, Manoj Pahwa, Vivek Gomber, and Rahul Ravindran leave a strong mark.
Jigra Music
The music of the film is decent, and even the background score grabs our attention. But, when the movie itself is weak, the music can't really help much.
Jigra Review Final Verdict
Overall, Jigra fails to impress. This Vasan Bala-Alia Bhatt combo is a misfire. If you want to watch it, maybe wait for its OTT release.
