Meet the Jury Behind the 54th Kerala State Film Awards
A staggering 160 films vied for the prestigious Kerala State Film Awards this year. This marked the highest number of entries ever received for the awards, showcasing the burgeoning creativity and productivity within the industry.
To efficiently manage the high volume of entries, two primary committees were established, each responsible for screening 80 films. From this initial pool, approximately 30 percent of the films were shortlisted based on their merits. These selected films were then judged by the final jury, culminating in the announcement of the awards. Films certified in 2023 were considered for the 54th Kerala State Film Awards.
This year's jury was chaired by the eminent Hindi director and screenwriter Sudhir Mishra. Sudhir, celebrated for his contributions to Indian cinema, brought extensive experience and a discerning eye to the judging process. He was renowned for his impactful works, including the National Award-winning "Dharavi" and the critically acclaimed "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi." Sudhir's directorial debut, "Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin," earned the National Film Award for Best Debut in 1987. His accolades included international recognition, having been honoured by the French government in 2010 with the prestigious Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
The jury for the Kerala State Film Awards 2023 was comprised of distinguished members from various facets of the film industry. In addition to Sudhir Mishra, the preliminary judging panel included two subcommittee heads: filmmaker Priyanandanan and cinematographer Azhagappan. Both also participated in the final judging panel. They were joined by prominent figures such as filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, writer N.S. Madhavan, actor Ann Augustine, and musician Sreevalsan J. Menon.
The preliminary panel was further supported by a team of experts, including cinematographer Prathap V. Nair, editor Vijay Shankar, writers Shihabuddin Poythumkadavu, Vinoy Thomas, and Malavika Binny, and sound recordist C.R. Chandran. Additionally, a specialised jury focussing on cinema-related writings was led by film critic and writer Janaki Sreedharan, with assistance from film critic Jose K. Manuel and writer O.K. Santosh. C. Ajoy, secretary of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, served as the member secretary across all panels.
