Viewers are noticing how the 1970s-inspired styling shapes Gulrukh, turning the character’s fashion, hair and makeup into one of the most discussed aspects of the crime drama.

Retro styling in Matka King highlights Kritika Kamra’s detailed transformation
The styling team pays close attention to every layer, not just the outfits seen on screen. Hair is set in statement waves and updos, makeup leans on bold eyes and soft lips, and jewellery is chosen to echo vintage glamour, creating a rich, immersive 1970s mood for the audience.
Kritika’s appearance as Gulrukh in Matka King draws from the classic elegance of Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Rekha and Sharmila Tagore. Polka dot dresses, Parsi sarees and structured Western pieces appear across episodes, with each costume reflecting research into the decade’s changing fashion and nightlife.
Sharing her experience, Kritika said, "The team spent a lot of time understanding the look and feel of the era and my character Gulrukh particularly. It started with a photo of Parveen Babi that Nagraj sir had shared and then we looked at the legendary Zeenat Aman, Sharmila Tagore, Rekha for inspiration. Our costume designer, Priyanka Dubey did multiple trials with me. Everything from the hair to shoes and accessories was discussed and sourced with great care. Not just the iconic actresses of the time, we also saw real photos of jazz clubs, races and Parsi events that have been documented. The costume, hair and makeup have been a big part of who this character is and helped me greatly in finding the poise that Gulrukh needed."
With this approach, Matka King uses fashion as a storytelling tool, not just a period detail. Kritika Kamra’s Gulrukh stands out as a stylish figure shaped by research and collaboration, explaining why the 'Matka Queen’ look has become a central talking point around the series.
