Jana Nayagan Advance Booking Update: Censor Delay Puts Tamil Nadu Bookings On Hold: Report

Censor Certificate Delays Advance Sales of Jana Nayagan: Advance booking for the upcoming Tamil political action drama Jana Nayagan has hit a temporary roadblock in Tamil Nadu, with theaters yet to open ticket sales as the film awaits its censor certificate. The development has come less than a week before the film's scheduled theatrical release on January 9, making it a key talking point within the trade as of January 5.

Jana Nayagan CBFC Clearance Delay Hits TN Bookings

According to a report by box office tracking portal Sacnilk, exhibitors across Tamil Nadu have chosen to hold back advance bookings until the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) issues its clearance. Theater owners are reportedly avoiding premature scheduling to prevent last-minute adjustments in case certification is delayed further.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay in the lead role, alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju. The film has drawn heightened attention as it is positioned as Vijay's final on-screen appearance before his anticipated full-time entry into politics.

Trade sources cited by Sacnilk indicate that the CBFC has reportedly suggested a few minor modifications, including dialogue changes and small cuts. Until these are addressed and the censor certificate is formally granted, Tamil Nadu exhibitors are opting to wait before opening bookings. This caution is particularly evident among single-screen theaters, which rely heavily on early scheduling to plan show timings during the festive Pongal window.

The delay has also triggered speculation on social media, with discussions linking the certification process to the film's political undertones. However, industry observers point out that late certification is not unusual for high-profile releases, especially those carrying political or sensitive themes. In many past cases, films have received clearance only days before release without impacting their release plans.

Overseas and Other State Bookings Open as TN Wait Continues

While Tamil Nadu bookings remain on hold, Jana Nayagan has already opened advance sales in overseas markets and select Indian states such as Karnataka and Kerala. As per Sacnilk's tracking, the film has reportedly generated strong early interest in these regions, with opening-day pre-sales indicating a solid start. Some multiplex chains outside Tamil Nadu are also awaiting clarity on certification before fully committing to show allocations.

With multiple releases lined up around the Pongal period, theater owners are under pressure to finalize screens and showtimes. Some exhibitors are reportedly considering opening online bookings even without the censor certificate, as pressure mounts with the release date approaching.

Produced by Venkat K. Narayana and co-produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Lohith N. K., Jana Nayagan features a technical team that includes cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan ISC and editor Pradeep E. Ragav. As the film approaches its release date, the industry will be closely watching developments around the censor certificate and the subsequent opening of advance bookings in Tamil Nadu.
