Suriya’s ‘Retro’ OTT Release: Platform, Date & Streaming Details Revealed

Suriya's latest romantic action entertainer Retro, which hit theaters on May 1st to a mixed response, is now set for its digital premiere. The film's OTT rights have been acquired by the popular streaming platform Netflix. Following its theatrical run, Retro has found renewed interest among viewers in the digital space. The movie is officially available for streaming on Netflix starting May 31st, 2025, allowing fans to enjoy the action-packed drama from the comfort of their homes.

Retro follows the story of Paarivel Kannan (Suriya), the adopted son of a notorious gangster and smuggler, Thilagan (Joju George). Initially involved in criminal activities for his father, Paarivel decides to walk away from that world after falling in love with Rukmini (Pooja Hegde). However, Thilagan wants crucial information about a mysterious element called “Gold Fish,” which only Paarivel possesses. After being arrested and escaping from jail, Paarivel begins a desperate search for Rukmini, who has left him in anger. The film unfolds the mystery behind Thilagan adopting Paarivel, the mafia’s hunt for the Gold Fish, Rukmini’s whereabouts, and Paarivel’s mission to bring smiles to enslaved people in the Andaman Islands.

Suriya carries the film with his strong screen presence and convincingly portrays the many shades of Paarivel – a ruthless gangster, a devoted lover, and a man on a redemptive path. His performance stands out despite the flawed script. Pooja Hegde, though given ample screen time, plays a de-glamorized role with limited impact and scope for performance. Joju George, Prakash Raj, and Vidhu deliver decent performances, but their characters lack depth. Overall, the actors do their best with the material they are given, but the weak writing lets them down.

Director Karthik Subbaraj’s storytelling falters significantly in Retro. While the concept offers multiple narrative layers, the execution ends up confusing, with too many subplots that don’t blend cohesively. The screenplay lacks clarity, making it difficult for the audience to stay engaged or understand character motivations.

Technically, the film struggles to elevate the lackluster story. Santhosh Narayanan attempts to enhance the narrative with his background score, while Shreyaas Krishna’s cinematography stands out, especially in capturing the scenic beauty of the Andaman Islands. The production values by Jyothika and Suriya are top-notch, ensuring the film looks visually polished despite its narrative issues.

Retro is a gangster drama that blends crime, love, family emotions, and action. While it falters in storytelling and character development, the film may still appeal to hardcore fans of Suriya, who delivers a compelling performance. If you’re heading in with modest expectations and are curious to see Suriya in a layered role, Retro might offer you a mildly satisfying cinematic experience.
