Raised with modest means, his early life was shaped by strong family values, perseverance, and a passion for performing arts that eventually guided him toward a career in cinema. After completing his primary and higher secondary education at Vidyadhiraja Vidya Bhavan Higher Secondary School and later at Union Christian College, Aluva, he pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, where his interest in mimicry and performing arts began to shape his future career in cinema. In 1998, Dileep married actress Manju Warrier, and the couple has a daughter named Meenakshi. Following their divorce, he later married actress Kavya Madhavan in 2016, and the two have a daughter together named Mahalakshmi. Career Life He stepped into the film industry as a mimicry artist with the Kalabhavan troupe, where he quickly gained recognition for his versatile performances. Though he began as an average mimicry artist, his hard work, sharp observation skills, and ability to transform into a wide range of characters helped him steadily rise in popularity, eventually opening the doors to opportunities in cinema. Later, he worked as an assistant director under filmmaker Kamal, gaining valuable experience behind the camera. He eventually appeared in a small role in the film Ennodu Ishtam Koodamo, which became his first on-screen appearance. He got his true breakthrough soon after, marking the beginning of his successful acting career. Controversies Surrounding Dileep In 2017, Dileep was arrested in connection with the abduction and alleged sexual assault of a prominent Malayalam actress. Following the incident, the actress filed a case against the conspirators, and Dileep was named as one of the primary accused. He spent over 80 days in jail during the investigation. Later, director Balachandra Kumar alleged that Dileep and his associates had plotted to intimidate the investigating officers, with leaked audio clips bringing the controversy back into the public eye. In 2022, the Kerala High Court granted anticipatory bail to Dileep and the others in connection with the alleged conspiracy to threaten the officers, allowing them to avoid immediate arrest while the legal proceedings continued. On December 8 Kerala court delivered its long-awaited verdict in the 2017 case, in which Dileep was one of the prime accused. As reported by Bar and Bench, the court declared that Dileep was not found guilty. On March 10, 2026, the Kerala High Court issued notices to actor Dileep and several others after the state government challenged their acquittal in the sensational 2017 actress sexual assault case. The development came after the government filed an appeal seeking a fresh review of the trial court’s verdict that cleared the accused. The High Court admitted the appeal, in which the state has questioned the acquittal of Dileep and three others in the case. The government has also sought enhancement of the punishment awarded to the six individuals who were sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting the actress. A bench comprising A. K. Jayasankaran Nambiar and Jobin Sebastian issued notices to both the six persons who were convicted and the four who had been acquitted by the trial court.
