Ranjith is a prominent Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer who has made a lasting impact on Malayalam cinema with his powerful storytelling and memorable characters. Known for blending commercial appeal with emotional depth, he has delivered several critically acclaimed and popular films over the years, including Ravanaprabhu, Spirit, Thirakkatha, and Indian Rupee.


Career Journey
He began his journey in the film industry as a scriptwriter with Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal. He soon gained recognition for his writing through films like Pradeshika Varthakal and Pookkalam Varavayi, which showcased his knack for humor and relatable storytelling. His collaboration with director Shaji Kailas proved to be highly successful. Together, they worked on films like Asuravamsham, and Ranjith went on to write Aaraam Thampuran, which became one of the biggest hits of his career and a defining film in Malayalam cinema.


Transition to Direction
Ranjith made a remarkable transition from screenwriting to direction with Ravanaprabhu, a sequel to the iconic Devasuram, starring Mohanlal. The film turned out to be a massive commercial success and quickly became a fan favorite, solidifying his place as a director. Beyond direction, Ranjith continued to shine as a writer with films like Maya Mayuram, showcasing his versatility in storytelling. Award & Recogonition
He has directed several critically acclaimed and award-winning films that highlight his strong storytelling and socially relevant themes. Among them, Spirit stands out for its powerful take on alcoholism and society, earning the National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues. He also directed Thirakkatha and Indian Rupee, both of which received the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam in their respective years, further cementing his reputation as a filmmaker of substance. In addition to national recognition, Ranjith has won six Kerala State Film Awards over the years.

Contraversy
Ranjith has also been in the news due to serious allegations of sexual harassment, which emerged in the context of the findings from the Justice K. Hema Committee Report on abuse and misconduct in the Malayalam film industry. In 2024, a case was registered against him after a Bengali actress filed a complaint with the Kochi City Police Commissioner. The complaint, reportedly sent via email, alleged that Ranjith had behaved inappropriately and touched her with sexual intent after inviting her to act in the film Paleri Manikyam back in 2009.

Following this, the Kerala High Court closed the anticipatory bail plea filed by Ranjith after the police informed the court that they were considering treating the alleged offence as bailable, given the time period in which it reportedly occurred. The case is part of a broader conversation around accountability and safety within the Malayalam film industry, especially in light of the Hema Committee report, which brought attention to longstanding issues faced by women in the field.
